Ise Japan

Shinto monk collecting donations in the holy city of Ise in Japan. (Phil Hill)

Ise, Japan

Yesterday we went to the most holy Shinto shrine in all of Japan, so holy in fact we weren’t allowed to even see it. This honor being reserved only for the emperor etc. I managed to sneak a few images (also not allowed near the shrine) instead mainly concentrating on the many tourists that flock there, including the most westerners I have seen since landing here. I was told that the shrine is rebuilt every 20 years to preserve the traditional building practices, including the beautiful Cypress bridges, the trees for which take around 200 years before they are ready to be used. Food highlights was a sesame seed ice cream and roasted green tea, and a new found love for anything containing Azuki beans.
