Cable beach Broome

Sunset looking at palm trees on cable beach in Broome, Western Australia (Phil Hill)

One year in Australia: Cable beach Broome.

Sunset is brilliant on Cable beach in Broome, Western Australia. People collected in 4×4’s on the sand while the camels trekked by. Backpackers and families congregated on the promenade above to picnic, drink and laugh. Incredible vibrant sunset colour filled the evening sky every night without question, a great place to watch it all go by.

A funny thing happens in Australia, almost on a daily basis, Australians love to chat, they also love to tell you, you’re doing it wrong!

Set up for the above picture, a man stumbles across to tell me I was in the wrong place for the best photo. “You need to be down there mate, by the rocks”,”Really?”, “That’s where I would be if I had my camera here” then duly notifying me EXACTLY what equipment he had, talking at me, not really listening. No matter, he was half cut I think anyway. I take this kind of thing as a complement, it simply meant I was actually in the right place, outside the box!

Broome: Island Peninsular

Broome quickly found its way into my top ten; the super flat water of the 22km long Cable beach was the perfect place to spend an entire day, taking the hired wheels straight onto the beach surrounded by more serious 4×4’s! (Who listen’s to ‘not on unsealed roads’ anyway), and the scantily clad OAP’s; this was also Australia’s most famous nudist beach!

Phenomenal colour will be the lasting impression, a huge part of why Western Australia is so appealing. Shooting stunning blues all day; burnt orange, red, and yellow in the evening. Finishing out the day in top brewery Matso’s for a very refreshing mango beer and a curry. I want to go back already!
