2012 – My year in pictures

 (Phil Hill)

Doing my thing…

When someone calls themselves a ‘Travel Photographer’ (as I have been known to do on occasion) do they really mean ‘Destination Photographer’? When does the physical act of travelling get covered alone (cue a flurry of wing-tip pictures). It’s the far off place that becomes the image, even when getting there is just as rewarding. 2012, like no other, has been a year of journeys, epic adventures and creating bench-mark images along the way.

How’s everyone’s resolutions looking?

2012 properly kicked off for me in February with my first trip outside Australia since landing 5 months before, Bali was everything I expected from beautiful South East Asia. I know the small Indonesian island gets a bad wrap, with all its hazy, sometimes nefarious, ‘bintang singlet’ wearing shenanigans, but I really felt the parts I saw were culturally and traditionally intact. That early trip I also shot one of my all time favourite pictures, even ending the year there shooting another assignment.

Still down under, it has been a load of fun exploring many parts of Australia.

Exmouth, completely unlike its UK namesake, a paradise like peninsular in north Western Australia, fringed by the underrated Ningaloo Reef (overshadowed by that one in the east no doubt) populated by a few locals and very large number of transients, not to mention countless Kangaroos.

Staying north, Broome, with its world-famous Cable Beach, and further still and Darwin in the Northern Territory. I love how Australia exceeds expectation, even when complacency appears (and that was not often) it showed off something even more amazing. Darwin was such a place. Super hot 24 hours of the day yet struck by the colourful setting sun colours, stuffing my face full of treats from the Mindil Beach markets, bliss.

Slightly closer to the place I call home, Lancelin is roughly 2 hours north of Perth and where the capital of WA goes to play. I saw a lot of Australia in 2012 and not even scratched the surface! Looking to 2013, I am going to hit the road and announce some big things in the next couple of months, stuff is twitching and I’m properly excited for the months ahead.

I have put together a 2012 greatest hits album, check it out

Hoping you all have a happy New Year!
