This project explores the ideas of truth and authenticity in the context of the exponential rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI). By drawing comparisons between the Farm Security Administration (FSA) photo-file, a heavily subjective documentary project controlled by Roy Stryker, and AI-generated imagery, the project sheds light on the persisting issues surrounding narrative control and image manipulation. I used AI to “restore” FSA photographs that were discarded by Stryker by hole punching the negative to demonstrate the ease with which this technology can construct images based on author input and manipulate their interpretation. It calls attention to the evolving nature of visual language and the need to critically engage with the veracity and intent of AI-generated images in a world saturated with visual artifice
