Getting up and Downunder

Singapore airlines Airbus A380

Travel to Australia

Singapore airlines has just been voted number two airline in the world, number ten in that list was Emirates which I flew to Japan with last year. I am guessing though that the voting wasn’t based on baggage allowance, very poor on Singapore airlines weighing in at a measly 20kg! with 7kg for carry on, my camera bag weighed 10kg on its own and there is no way it was ever going to check in my mini trekker. Thinking extremely  frugal thoughts I packed my life into one pathetic looking suitcase and left for Heathrow wearing my heaviest coat to drape over my camera bag at check-in. I do however enjoy long-haul flights, it gives you a chance to catch up on lots of films and music although after the 13 hour first stint I felt had to stand, walk for a while. Changi airport in Singapore seemed to sum up many of my experiences with Asia I have had so far, like being in ‘Back to the Future 2‘ a vision of the future from an eighties perspective! Including a highly retro carpet that spanned the entire terminal. A major plus for Changi was the free cinema (Heathrow take note) I stumbled into to kill some time during my 7 hour stopover. Ok so the film they had on was terrible; Big Mommas House 2, it was just quite nice to sit in some comfy chairs in a darkened room chilling out for a bit. It was early doors into Perth arriving  06:25 and feeling as you do when you travel 25 hours, no matter straight into town to grab a hire car as I quickly work out you can’t get anywhere in Australia without a motor. Desperate to get settled now, to get outside and to get photographing like any good tourist should.
